To pimp a policy: how hiphop and policy making can make lasting changes in (small) city context.
In the Netherlands hip hop organizers and researchers joined forces to influence policy. Common goal is a better, sustainable and representative infrastructure for hip hop organizers and talents. This talk will outline the steps taken on how to build this policy and how to continue to pimp a policy. Simon Mamahit and Claudia Marinelli will tell you about their journey and share successes and struggles. They will also open up the conversation so that you have the chance to share your work, successes and struggles.
Claudia Marinelli is a cultural anthropologist who has a passion for working with local communities, diversity, Hip Hop dance and Spoken Word. She works at a national centre of expertise on cultural education and participation (LKCA) in the Netherlands. Together with key figures from different Hip Hop scenes she started the Hip Hop Knowledge Cypher.
Simon Mamahit (1992) is a Dutch researcher, policy advisor, poet and MC. His research focusses on hiphop culture in a small-city context through scene building, collaboration with institutions and the valorisation of knowledge. Born and raised in the city of Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands he saw the rise, commercialization and institutionalization of hiphop culture in the Netherlands. As a cultural policy advisor for the province of Gelderland he seeks to improve the ecosystem of cultural policies, subsidies and level of organization for hiphop and/or youth based initiatives. Currently working for the provincial advisory organ of Gelderland (Cultuur Oost) and involved in many national subsidiary commissions and knowledge centers.
